Why You Should Clean Your Earrings

Sweat, oil, perfume, makeup, cleanser, your favourite hair products getting on them, and so on. The build-up sits right against your skin every time you wear them.

While cleaning your face, some of the soap residue may accumulate on the earrings over time and cause itchy ears or sensitivity to earrings. Sometimes, the metal itself tarnishes and causes allergies, making it difficult for you to wear them.

Cleaning your earrings once in two or more weeks can stop bacteria from building up near your skin, lowering the risk of irritation and infection. All that gunk can dull even high-quality pieces over time.

Safe Ways to Clean Earrings at Home

Here’s how you can get clean earrings without damaging/tarnishing them:

Things Needed: Mild dish soap/baby shampoo, soft-bristled toothbrush/eyebrow brush, lint-free cloth, warm water

What to Do:

1. Mix a few drops of the mild dish soap/baby shampoo in a wam bowl of water.

2. Place your earrings and clean gently with the toothbrush. If your earrings have pearls, gold plating, or adhesives binding the stones, refrain from soaking them.

3. Rinse with warm running water and clean with dry lint-free cloth or let them air dry.

What to Consider Before Cleaning Earrings

Recently, some new tools and ways have surfaced online for jewellery cleaning and maintenance. We dug a bit deeper and found the reason behind the hype and if you should try these methods as well.

Ultrasonic jewellery cleaner

A lot of TikTok videos show people tossing their glasses, earrings, rings, and necklaces into what seems like a vibrating box. It can be of great utility if you want to remove some gunk from your Sterling Silver earrings, a pair and a pair of glasses in five minutes.

Now where it might not be the best choice is if you have gold/silver plated earrings or earrings with soft gemstones like emeralds, pearls, or opals.

The downside is that the vibrations can potentially lead the prongs to loosen, ultimately causing the stones to fall out of their settings.

If you put all your jewellery at once, the vibrations will move them around, with the metal parts scraping against the gemstones and causing scratches.

If you have one, the best practice would be to use this cleaning machine sparingly and only for diamonds set in Gold or Sterling Silver.

Using Alcohol/Vinegar or other unproven DIYs

Some commercial cleaning solutions come with denatured alcohol that can do wonders for your Gold, Silver, and Platinum jewellery. It does work for diamonds too, but it may not be the best choice for softer gemstones like pearls or cleaning glued-in settings.

Nail polish remover may seem like the perfect solution for cleaning earrings, but it is not recommended at all. The acetone can damage metal plating, weaken your glued-in settings, and harm soft gemstones.

Lastly, vinegar can work if you have plain Gold or Silver earrings. Soak it in for 10-15 minutes, and you’ll get a decent result. Since vinegar is acidic, it can damage metal plating in your earrings.

When to Get Earrings Professionally Cleaned

If you’ve tried cleaning your earrings thoroughly but couldn’t get much grime out due to intricate settings or other reasons, a jeweller can help you. While it may not be the most convenient method, it will be the most effective if other ways didn’t work.
