How to Clean Your Engagement Ring: Keep It Sparkling for Years to Come

July 30, 2026
How to Clean Your Engagement Ring

An engagement ring is designed to be worn all day, making it one of the hardest-working pieces of jewellery you’ll ever own.

From hand creams and soap to cooking, gardening, and daily wear, it’s constantly exposed to substances that can leave behind residue and dull its sparkle.

The great thing about maintaining your engagement ring in pristine condition is that there is no need to use any costly products and special skills; everything you need to do is follow certain recommendations for proper care and cleaning. The following information is intended for those who want to take good care of their diamond rings.

Why Your Ring Doesn’t Shine Like It Used To

If your engagement ring no longer sparkles the way it used to when you first put it on, it is not because of the diamond but rather because of the layer of grime that has built up on top of it.

Skin oil, lotion, sunscreen, soap scum, dust and various other particles have built up over time creating an insulating layer over the surface of the diamond that prevents light from shining through properly.

Diamonds actually have an affinity for grease so it doesn’t take much to affect their brilliance.

Before You Clean, Know What Your Ring Is Made Of

All engagement rings can’t be cleaned the same way.

Most diamond rings and lab diamonds are hard enough to handle a quick and easy cleaning process using mild soap and warm water. Rings that have gems like emerald, opal, or pearl cannot be easily subjected to chemicals or any long soaking because they will affect the surface of the stone.

Another thing that counts is the metal used. Platinum is a very hard metal that forms a patina over time, but white gold would sometimes need to be rhodium plated for that bright look.

A Simple Way to Clean Your Engagement Ring at Home

Routine cleaning is quick and will produce visible results.

Firstly, fill up a small container with warm water and add a few drops of detergent into it. Put your ring into the mixture and let it sit there for about 15-20 minutes.

Then, take a soft toothbrush and start cleaning around the diamond, underneath the mounting, and in the areas between the claws, which accumulate dirt.

Rinse your ring under lukewarm running water and then dry it using a soft lint-free cloth.

Advice: Always rinse your ring in a bowl or over the plug to prevent accidental dropping of your precious ring into the drainpipe.

What NOT to Do While Cleaning Your Ring

Although it may seem like a good idea to get rid of dirt quickly by applying household items, some of them can potentially do your ring more harm than good.

First of all, one shouldn’t use toothpaste, bleach, chlorine, or abrasive cleansers, as they can potentially damage not only the precious metals but also the gems themselves. One shouldn’t use paper towels either, as they can leave microscopic scratches on the surface of the metal.

An ultrasonic cleaner is good for some diamond rings but not all of them, especially for the older settings and stones.

How Often Should You Clean Your Engagement Ring?

A little care goes a long way. Cleaning your ring regularly every week will help keep oils and residues from accumulating, while cleaning the ring thoroughly every month will keep it sparkling.

You can also consider getting your ring professionally cleaned every six to twelve months. In the process, the jeweler will be able to identify any loose gems or claws among other signs of wear that may not be noticed by you at home.

Keep Your Ring Sparkling at All Times

Your engagement ring isn’t just a piece of jewellery, but a functional aspect of your identity that must be preserved well. It doesn’t take more than a few minutes per week to keep its shine intact.

If you need help with cleaning your jewellery better and without damaging it, you can go to a jeweller for the same.
