Standing approximately 370mm high, this sculptural artwork is meticulously hand-assembled using plantation-grown Gaboon timber, layered with precision to create a striking balance of natural warmth and modern contrast. The golden timber tones are enhanced by deep black backing layers, giving the piece a strong visual presence while highlighting its intricate craftsmanship.
The design follows the powerful curve of the Hei Matau (Fish Hook), symbolising abundance, determination, and protection over water journeys. This form is deeply rooted in Māori tradition, representing not only physical strength but also a deep spiritual connection to Tangaroa, the ocean.
Flowing through the body of the hook are beautifully engraved traditional Māori-inspired patterns, including scale-like textures, koru elements, and flowing line work that represent growth, resilience, and the rhythm of the sea.
