A powerful embodiment of protection, balance, and spiritual guardianship, the Large Manaia Award is a striking contemporary artwork inspired by one of the most revered figures in Māori culture — the Manaia.
Standing approximately 370mm high, this sculptural piece is expertly hand-assembled using plantation-grown Gaboon timber, layered with precision-cut elements to create depth, contrast, and exceptional visual impact. The natural golden tones of the timber are beautifully complemented by bold black accents, giving the artwork a refined and modern presence while maintaining strong cultural roots.
The design features a flowing Manaia form, traditionally recognised as a guardian figure that protects land, sea, and sky. The sweeping curves and elongated body symbolise the connection between the physical and spiritual worlds, while the intricate detailing throughout represents strength, harmony, and guidance.
