Description
Large Carved Maori Wahaika Club with 21 Paua Inlaid on Stand
This large carved Maori Wahaika Club on stand makes a great gift for a 21st birthday.
This type of weapon is ceremonial and practical. Waha-ika means the mouth of the fish. If you look at the shape of the weapon it looks like the shape of a whales’ lower jaw bone. Many waha-ika have a small figure carved on the side. This figure would be a guardian to the owner and would often be a venerated ancestor. Wahaika carry the figure of a man on the other edge, its eyes decorated with native paua shell.
Proudly made in New Zealand from tulip wood, a sustainably harvested hardwood. There are always very slight differences in colours and carvings of hand carved products.
To avoid offending any Iwi or tribal groups, the designs are generic and representative of common Maori motifs.
The base is hand carved with wooden struts. The stand measures 50cm x 22cm x 14cm
Engraving – The front of the base can be laser engraved with 2 lines of engraving to mark that special occasion. (Allow 3-4 days)
