Design Description
A striking fusion of Aotearoa craftsmanship and cultural storytelling, the Tears of Tangaroa Award is a beautifully sculpted statement piece that captures the essence of the ocean and its enduring spirit.
Standing approximately 360mm high, this award is meticulously hand-assembled using premium New Zealand Rimu veneered MDF, complemented by layers of plantation-grown Gaboon. The natural warmth of the timber is enhanced through precision laser-cut detailing, creating depth, contrast, and refined structure throughout the design.
At the heart of the piece lies a powerful spiral koru-inspired motif, symbolising growth, life, and the continuous flow of Tangaroa – the god of the sea. This central swirl is intricately framed with layered patterns and carved accents, drawing the eye inward to a stunning NZ Paua centrepiece, shimmering with iridescent blues, greens, and purples reminiscent of ocean tides.
Above, a delicately cut crest reveals a Mother of Pearl and Paua laminate inlay, adding a luminous contrast against the rich golden tones of the Rimu. The interplay between natural wood grain and oceanic shell creates a visual harmony that is both elegant and culturally meaningful.
The outer form, shaped like a droplet or tear, reinforces the narrative of Tangaroa — representing water, life, and connection. Fine engraved detailing around the circular elements adds movement and rhythm, giving the piece a sense of flowing energy.
This artwork is mounted on a handmade black base (165mm x 100mm x 30mm high), providing a strong, modern foundation that enhances its premium presence while ensuring stability and display impact.
