Full Size Maori Wooden Taiaha with Carved Shaft and Head – WM978
This full-size Taiaha is a particularly fine example of traditional Māori weaponry, combining cultural authenticity with striking craftsmanship. Measuring approximately 145cm in length, it is carved from sustainably harvested Tulip Wood, a hardwood prized for being both lightweight and exceptionally strong, making this Taiaha suitable for presentation display as well as mau rākau practice.
The Taiaha is traditionally described as a pointed staff, and this piece stays true to that form. The pointed end features a finely carved head, complete with pāua shell eyes and a prominent, defiant tongue, symbolising strength, challenge, and mana. In keeping with traditional carving methods, the head is symmetrically carved on both sides, ensuring authenticity and balance.
Just below the head, decorative feathers adorn the shaft, adding visual presence and cultural significance. The central shaft is subtly oval in shape for proper grip and handling, while the lower section is flattened and carved on both sides with flowing Māori koru motifs, representing new life, growth, and continuity.
As each Taiaha is individually hand-carved, minor variations in carving detail may occur, adding to the uniqueness and character of every piece.
