Māori Coloured Rafter Kōwhaiwhai Wooden Wall Art – New Zealand Rimu Veneer - WCRA

Rafter Kōwhaiwhai – A Beautiful Celebration of Māori Art, Heritage & Tradition

Bring the rich artistic traditions of Aotearoa New Zealand into your home with this exquisite Māori Coloured Rafter Kōwhaiwhai Wooden Wall Art.

Kōwhaiwhai is one of the most distinctive forms of traditional Māori decorative art, recognised for its flowing curves, repeating patterns, graceful lines and beautifully balanced designs.

These intricate patterns are commonly found decorating the rafters, known as heke, within traditional Māori meeting houses (wharenui).

In a wharenui, the rafters form part of a building rich in cultural meaning, where carving, painting and architecture can express whakapapa (genealogy), ancestral connections, identity and the history of the people associated with the meeting house.

Kōwhaiwhai designs often draw inspiration from the natural world, particularly the unfurling koru fern frond, flowing plant forms and other organic shapes.

Depending on the specific design and its cultural context, these patterns may represent growth, renewal, continuity, ancestry and the enduring connections between generations.

The Rafter Kōwhaiwhai design takes inspiration from this beautiful decorative tradition, bringing the elegance of Māori-inspired architectural patterns into a contemporary wooden wall art panel.

Its flowing design creates a sense of movement, rhythm and harmony, making it an attractive decorative feature with a meaningful connection to New Zealand's cultural heritage.

Beautifully Crafted from New Zealand Rimu Veneer

Proudly made in New Zealand, this beautiful wall art panel is crafted from New Zealand Rimu veneer board, combining the natural warmth of timber with contemporary coloured decorative detailing.

Rimu is admired for its attractive grain and rich golden-brown tones, making it an elegant choice for decorative New Zealand-inspired artwork.

The natural timber appearance provides a beautiful foundation for the kōwhaiwhai design, creating a pleasing contrast between traditional-inspired patterns and contemporary colour.

The coloured Rafter design brings visual interest and personality to the artwork while maintaining an elegant, timeless appearance.

Its compact rectangular format makes it easy to display in a variety of interior spaces.

Contemporary Māori-Inspired Rafter Design

The distinctive appeal of this artwork lies in its combination of traditional-inspired Māori rafter patterns, flowing decorative shapes and contemporary styling.
