Māori Coloured Fish Scale Kōwhaiwhai Wooden Wall Art – New Zealand Rimu Veneer - WCFS

Fish Scale Kōwhaiwhai – Inspired by Nature, Māori Art & the Ocean

Celebrate the beauty of New Zealand's natural environment and Māori-inspired artistic traditions with this exquisite Coloured Fish Scale Kōwhaiwhai Wooden Wall Art.

Kōwhaiwhai is a distinctive form of traditional Māori decorative art, recognised for its graceful flowing lines, repeating shapes, intricate curves and beautifully balanced patterns.

These designs are commonly found in Māori meeting houses, particularly along the rafters and interior architectural features, where they can express important connections to ancestry, whakapapa (genealogy), nature and cultural identity.

The Fish Scale design draws visual inspiration from the overlapping patterns and rhythmic forms associated with fish scales, creating a contemporary decorative interpretation of traditional Māori-inspired artwork.

Fish and the ocean hold an important place in Māori history and culture, reflecting the deep relationship between people, the sea and the natural environment.

The repeating patterns of this artwork create a sense of movement, rhythm and harmony, making it a beautiful decorative feature with a distinctive New Zealand character.

Beautifully Crafted from New Zealand Rimu Veneer

Proudly made in New Zealand, this elegant wall art panel is crafted from New Zealand Rimu veneer board, combining the warmth of natural timber with colourful contemporary decorative detailing.

Rimu is admired for its rich golden-brown tones and attractive woodgrain, making it a beautiful material for New Zealand-inspired decorative pieces.

The natural timber appearance complements the flowing kōwhaiwhai patterns, creating an attractive balance between traditional-inspired design and contemporary presentation.

The artwork's coloured Fish Scale pattern adds vibrancy and visual interest, while the warm timber finish provides an elegant foundation.

Its rectangular shape and compact dimensions make it suitable for display in a wide variety of interior settings.

Contemporary Māori-Inspired Design

The distinctive appeal of this artwork lies in its combination of flowing kōwhaiwhai patterns, fish-scale-inspired forms and contemporary colour.

The repeated decorative shapes create a sense of movement and continuity, while the timber background adds warmth and character.

The result is a stylish decorative piece that complements both traditional and modern interiors.
