This impressive large Māori Wahaika club on stand is a powerful and meaningful representation of traditional Māori craftsmanship. Beautifully hand carved and presented on a matching carved stand, it makes an exceptional corporate gift, 21st birthday present, or collector’s display piece.
The Wahaika is both a ceremonial and practical traditional Māori weapon. The name Waha-ika translates to “mouth of the fish”, and the distinctive shape of the club reflects this meaning, resembling the lower jawbone of a whale. Historically, the Wahaika was prized not only for its function but also for the symbolism carried within its carvings.
This piece features a carved human figure along the edge of the weapon, traditionally representing a guardian or venerated ancestor who would protect and guide the owner. The figure’s eyes are inlaid with native paua shell, adding depth, character, and spiritual significance to the design. Flowing traditional Māori motifs, including koru and kōwhaiwhai patterns, are carved throughout the club, symbolising strength, ancestry, continuity, and life.
To ensure cultural respect, the carving patterns used are generic and representative of common Māori motifs, avoiding association with any specific iwi or tribal group.
The Wahaika is crafted from sustainably harvested Tulip Wood, a strong and durable hardwood chosen for its fine grain and rich natural colouring. It is proudly made in New Zealand by skilled carvers. As each piece is individually hand carved, no two are exactly the same—natural variations in wood grain, colour, and carving detail are a hallmark of authentic handcrafted work.
The piece is presented on a hand-carved wooden display stand, featuring carved detailing and wooden support struts, allowing the Wahaika to be proudly showcased in an office, boardroom, home, or private collection.
