Full Size Maori Wooden Taiaha with New Zealand Greenstone Blade

This full size Maori Taiaha is made even more stunning with the addition of a pounamu greenstone tongue. This piece has Pāua inlay set in the eyes and feathers decorated just below the head. The rau is the end of the taiaha and is 6cm wide.

A taiaha is made up of three important sections.  The greenstone end is called the upoko (head) and comprises the carved head with paua shell eyes, and the protruding (in this case greenstone) tongue, the arero.  The middle section, the tinana, is where the taiaha is held.  The other end, the blade, is called the rau.

Just like the traditional Taiaha, this replica Taiaha is carved the same on both sides. Feathers decorate the shaft just below the head
