Finding the right men’s watch

Start with how the watch will be worn. For everyday and outdoor wear, look at sports and digital watches; for work and occasions, dress watches. Then choose how it is powered: automatic, solar or battery quartz.

Size, power and water rating

Half of the men’s watches here are 40–46 mm across, with a median of about 42 mm. A 38–42 mm case suits most wrists for dress wear, while sports and digital watches are often larger. Around one in five with a manufacturer specification is an automatic, and solar models charge from light. For swimming, choose 100 metres or more — many G-Shock and Promaster models are rated to 200 metres.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size watch should a man wear?

Half of the men's watches here are between 40 and 46 mm across. For a dress watch, around 38–42 mm suits most wrists; sports and digital watches are often larger. The case size is on every listing.

What's the difference between automatic, solar and quartz?

An automatic winds itself as you move and needs no battery. A solar watch charges from light. A quartz watch runs on a battery. Browse automatic, solar or quartz watches.

What does the water-resistance rating mean?

It is set by the maker, and what each rating allows differs slightly between brands. As a guide, "water resistant" with no depth and 30 m cover rain and splashes, 100 m suits swimming and snorkelling, and 200 m suits skin diving. The rating is on every listing — check the maker's guidance before taking a watch into the water.
