How Eco-Drive works

An Eco-Drive watch has a light-collecting dial that charges a rechargeable cell inside. Worn regularly, it keeps itself charged; how long it runs in darkness differs between models and is given in each watch’s specifications.

What’s in the range

You’ll find two-hand and three-hand dress watches, chronographs, and Promaster sport and dive models. Compare case size, band and water rating on each listing. Browse by audience: men’s Citizen or women’s Citizen; or see all solar watches.

What the specifications show

Many of these watches have sapphire crystals, and most are rated to 100 metres, with Promaster divers going to 200 or 300 metres. Stainless steel is the usual band, with Super Titanium and polyurethane on some sport models. Men’s cases are mostly around 41 mm; women’s are smaller, from about 25 mm.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Eco-Drive charge?

The dial collects light — sunlight or indoor light — and stores it in a rechargeable cell. Worn regularly, the watch keeps itself charged. How long it runs in the dark differs by model and is given in its specifications.

Does an Eco-Drive watch ever need a new battery?

It has no regular battery to replace. The rechargeable cell is designed to last many years; if a watch stops holding its charge after a long time, it can be serviced.

What warranty comes with a Citizen Eco-Drive?

Citizen listings that state a warranty give 5 years from the manufacturer. The warranty for each watch is shown on its product page.

What does the water-resistance rating mean?

It is set by the maker, and what each rating allows differs slightly between brands. As a guide, "water resistant" with no depth and 30 m cover rain and splashes, 100 m suits swimming and snorkelling, and 200 m suits skin diving. The rating is on every listing — check the maker's guidance before taking a watch into the water.
