21st Keys & Birthday Keys

The 21st key is one of New Zealand’s most enduring gift traditions — handed over at the party, signed by family and friends, and kept for years afterwards. Stonex carries hundreds of designs, from simple wooden and glass keys to carved pieces with pāua shell inlay, in Samoan, Tongan, Māori and Cook Islands designs alongside classic and modern styles. Many hold a photo you set into the key yourself, and most offer optional engraving — the product page shows each option and its price. Most orders are delivered within 3–5 days across New Zealand. In-stock items can be collected within 24 hours from our Auckland showroom.

Choosing a 21st key

A 21st key marks a coming-of-age and is kept long after the party. With hundreds of designs to choose from, the first choice is usually the material.

Mirror & glass keys — a clean, modern look, many made to hold a photo behind the glass. See mirror keys and glass keys.

Wooden keys — the traditional choice and our largest range, many with pāua shell inlay and space for a photo. See wooden 21st keys.

Carved keys & carvings — carved key designs in Māori, Samoan, Tongan and Cook Islands styles, plus carved gifts for anyone who would rather not give a key. See carved 21st keys or alternatives to a key.

Personalisation

Most keys offer optional engraving, such as a name, date and message. Most engraving options are NZ$30, charged per item for each option you select; a few separately named services, such as laser engraving on a carved base, are priced differently. The product page shows the exact options and price for each design, and nothing is added if you leave engraving unselected.

Many designs hold a photo — check the product page for how the photo is fitted and whether a stand is included.

Delivery & collection

Most orders are delivered within 3–5 days across New Zealand. In-stock items can be collected within 24 hours from our Auckland showroom at 333 Great South Road, Ōtāhuhu.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you make Samoan, Tongan, Cook Islands and Māori designs?

Yes — we carry Samoan, Tongan, Māori and Cook Islands key designs. See our Samoan, Tongan and Māori 21st keys.

How long will it take to arrive?

Most orders are delivered within 3–5 days across New Zealand. In-stock items can be collected within 24 hours.

Can I get a key for a 50th, 18th or 1st birthday?

Yes — some designs are made for other ages, such as 1st, 18th and 50th birthdays, and the product title shows the age.

Can I return a personalised key?

Returns are covered by our Refund Policy. If you add engraving, it is made to the details you enter, so please check them carefully before ordering. If there’s a problem with your order, contact us and we’ll help.

Is engraving included in the price?

No — engraving is optional and only added if you select it. Most engraving options are NZ$30, charged per item for each option you select. The product page shows the exact options and price for each design.

How does a photo key work?

Photo keys have a frame or window you set your own photo into — you don’t send us a photo. Check the frame size on the product page so your photo fits.

What is pāua shell inlay?

Pāua is a New Zealand abalone whose shell has a deep blue, green and violet iridescence. On our keys it is cut and set into the piece, often to form the number or as an accent.

Can I see one before I buy?

Yes — visit our showroom at 333 Great South Road, Ōtāhuhu, Auckland, or call 09 276 0409 and we’ll have a design out for you. In-stock items can be collected within 24 hours.
